The Transition & Employment Team at Mt. Carmel has a collective goal of assisting veterans and their family members to gain meaningful employment. Based on your specific situation, you will get one-on-one assistance by a peer navigator counselor that has been in a situation very similar to yours. You will have the support of the entire team and access to all of Mt. Carmel’s wrap-around services. Our team helps you determine your career goals, develop a resume, practice interviewing techniques, identify and network for jobs. We also host job fairs, networking events, employer days, and job search skills workshops.

The nationally recognized Veterans Integration Program (VIP) at Mt. Carmel specializes in providing customized employment assistance to transitioning service members from all branches of service. This program, facilitated by Peer Navigators who are themselves military veterans, aims to ease the military to civilian career transition stressors by connecting job seekers to community employers and partners though employment focused events and networking opportunities.

Eligibility: Any transitioning service member, 1-year prior, or up to 2-years from separation from any status or component of the military.

The MilSpouse Career Program (MCP) provides employment assistance services to military spouses of all eras along the Front Range through direct support within Mt Carmel and integrated use of existing community resources and partnerships.

Available services include:

    • Coaching Services
    • Career readiness workshops
    • Networking opportunities and other special employment-related events such as industry spotlight days, employer recruiting events and employment-focused panel discussions
    • Resource referrals to our valued community partners and others in the Colorado Springs area
    • Volunteer opportunities at Mt. Carmel which enable spouses to gain marketable skills and work experience which can also be documented on their resumes

Mt. Carmel also actively participates in community programs supporting military spouse employment such as the Colorado Springs Military Spouse Career Coalition (MSCC) ( and the Pikes Peak Workforce Center ( Military Veterans and Spouses (MVS) Coalition whose missions are to empower military spouses in pursuit of meaningful careers and/or livable wages, and to support legislation and initiatives that minimize military spouse employment barriers.

The Veterans Service to Career Program (VSCP) provides customized job coaching, job search skills training, resource referrals, employer connectivity and provision of work-related supportive services funded in part by private grants and through Colorado HB 18-1343, and administered in partnership with the Pikes Peak Workforce Center.

Key components of the VSCP include job coaching, internships, training and work-related supportive services.

Eligibility: Veterans who –

      • Are within at least six months of separation
      • Have documentation (DD Form 214 or orders)
      • Served on active duty for a period of more than 180 days and were discharged or released with other than a dishonorable discharge
      • Were discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability
      • Are a member of a reserve component under an order to active duty, served on active duty during a period of war or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge is authorized and was discharged or released from such duty with other than a dishonorable discharge.

Dependent family members –

      • Current or former spouse (within six months, or later, of the sponsor’s separation) who is currently eligible for Veteran’s benefits such as healthcare, retirement and access to military facilities
      • Must have documentation (DD Form 214 or orders)
      • A Veteran’s dependent child who is 26 years of age or younger and lives in the home of the Veteran
      • A Veteran’s caregiver who is 18 years of age or older and has significant responsibility for managing the well-being of an injured Veteran who has been determined unemployable by the Veterans’ Administration.

Through community and industry partnerships the Military Community Career Development Program (MCCDP) promotes career development, skills training, and education pathways for Mt. Carmel clients. This includes service members, veterans, military spouses, caregivers and dependents who reside with the veteran. Key components include DoD SkillBridge/Army Career Skills Programs (CSP), Prep Connect 360, Level Up Scholarship Program, Internships (paid & nonpaid), VA Work Study programs, and volunteer opportunities.


As our five local military installations continue to track approximately 400 service members transitioning out of our local military force each month, there are multiple opportunities for local corporations, businesses and organizations to get involved in and support veteran job seekers. If you have employment opportunities and are looking for veterans to hire let us help you find those individuals. We work with veterans and their family members seeking jobs every day. If we know of specific employment opportunities in the community, we can send the best candidates your way!


Each month, Mt. Carmel hosts Networking and Mock Interview events to teach transitioning service members these vital job seeking skills. We always bring in community employers to assist us, and their coaching and mentorship is invaluable! We would love to have you on our team!

Spread the Word

Guide veterans and their families to Mt. Carmel so we can provide additional support and help. Remember, we do more than just employment at Mt. Carmel, if you know a veteran who needs any type of support, please send them our way so we can get them the best resources possible!

Join our Internship Program

Critical to the veteran population and to their spouses is the opportunity to gain relevant civilian workforce experience. Veterans often have little concept of what working in an office or a particular industry environment would be like. There also can be hesitation on the part of employers to hire and train a transitioning service member given their lack of civilian experience. Equally challenging is the ability for the spouse of a veteran to enter the workforce with the gaps in employment history and potentially lost work experience due to frequent moves and managing the family dynamic during their spouse’s deployments.

In both cases, having the opportunity to earn experience through internships at reputable organizations that potentially have permanent positions available at the conclusion of the assignment represents the perfect entrée into civilian employment. Even if the hiring organization is unable to offer the intern permanent employment, the experience will provide the veteran or eligible family member with valuable experience to contribute to a stronger resume and afford them greater job prospects in the future. We are currently seeking employers who would be willing to participate in this great program by hiring veterans and eligible family members through this wonderful internship program.

Meet the Transition & Employment Team

Mark A. Smith
Transition & Employment Department

A retired Sergeant First Class from the U.S. Army, Mark is originally from Dexter, Missouri and resided there until his enlistment into the Army. Upon graduation from high school, he joined the Army as a Motor Transport Operator. After 20 years of service, he retired out of the Nashville US Army Recruiting Battalion and has settled in Colorado Springs. When he is not at work he enjoys volunteering with The Veterans for Veterans Non-Profit organization and the El Paso County Homeless Coalition. Mark has two daughters and a son. He enjoys helping and giving back to Veterans and their families.

Elan M. Rainford

Veteran Service to Career Program

Elan is a third-generation Air Force veteran whose son is currently active duty Navy. She is a student at UCCS, working on a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Services focusing on Veterans. She came to us in April 2020 as a UCCS work-study and feels honored to be on board full time. She is a positive, upbeat person with a can-do attitude. Elan is compassionate and has been serving in her church community for several years. Elan finds joy in supporting her church’s children’s department. She has four adult children of her own and she is blessed with two beautiful grandchildren! When Elan is not working, she enjoys traveling to see the grandbabies, one in Chicago and the other in North Carolina. Her love of dogs and people mean there will always be dog treats in her desk and delicious candy on her desk.

Nick is a U.S. Army veteran originally from Buffalo, NY. With just over 11 years of service and 3 tours to Iraq, Nick finished his commitment at Fort Carson as an Aircraft Refueler on Butts Airfield. After the military Nick focused on his education and family completing a BA in Management, and an MBA in Business from Ashford University while taking care of his 3 children. In Nick’s spare time he plays guitar in a local rock band and enjoys participating in and helping out in local veterans’ events. Nick is also a diehard Buffalo Bills fan!

Jon Dix

Jon retired from the US Air Force after 22 years in Missile Operations and Intelligence. He served throughout the US, Korea, and the Middle East. After the military Jon started his own business serving the rental home needs of his clients; additionally, he took a position as a project manager with a startup veteran owned construction and engineering firm. Jon has a Bachelor’s in History from the University of Vermont, a Master’s Degree in Administration from the University of Montana. Jon is an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve volunteer, has supported youth baseball as a coach, and served as the volunteer chair of the Military Veterans and Spouses Employment Expo from 2015 to 2018.

Sunny is a U.S. Army Veteran with seven years of logistics management experience. She earned her degree at the University of Dubuque in Iowa with a Criminal Justice focus. While transitioning out of the military, she started a vacation rental management business and delivered her son. She is a Colorado native with a love for sunny weather, being outdoors, and a passion for helping other veterans succeed.

Ashley Hardy

Ashley has been a military spouse for six years, she’s from Georgia. She has experience working with Veterans and their families from working with the Soldier for Life Transition Assistant Program. Ashley has a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from Walden University and she would like to pursue her Master’s in Social Work. She has three beautiful children. She and her family PCS’d from Hawaii in December of 2019. As a military spouse, she knows how difficult it can be to transition and find employment. Her passion is helping other Military families. Ashley enjoys watching documentaries and any activity that includes her family.
